Sharing our learning on
Empowerment and Accountability

The State Accountability and Voice Initiative (SAVI) is a demand-side governance programme. In ten states in Nigeria, we support civil society groups, media houses and State House of Assembly elected representatives to be informed, credible and effective agents of citizen voice and accountability. As a result, our partners are playing an effective part in promoting more responsive, accountable and inclusive state governance, and making a difference to the lives of people in their states.

This website is to share the practical approaches and tools we have developed as a programme which we find are making a difference to our partners and what they are able to achieve. Our aim is to share our learning with other programmes, and to contribute to debates on how development money can best empower citizens and support effective governments.

Central to SAVI’s effectiveness is always aiming to ‘practise what we preach’

The SAVI programme came to an end in April 2016. The same management team are now implementing the Engaged Citizens component of a larger follow-up programme, the DFID-funded Partnership to Engage, Reform and Learn (PERL) programme in Nigeria, which started in May 2016. Elements of this programme take a similar approach to SAVI. Click the following link to access the PERL website:
